Socialists, communists (“artists”) protest Toronto Socialist Film Fest over Israeli-made films

You can almost hear the “artists” whining (while ducking under all those bothersome Canada department of 'Canadians can't live without government sponsorship for everything' logo banners which are blocking the cameras), Wah!  This is s’posed to be all socialist-y and everything!  People who don’t see things our way aren’t s’posed to be allowed to say stuff here!  This is the Toronto Film Festival!

NatPo front page todayWhat a lovely picture of a Gang of Six Useful Idiots on the front page of the National Post this morning.

The six pictures present yet another picture of folks not just conjoined in their rabid anti-Israelism, but in socialism and/or other left-wing or radical left activism.  So why not explain that more fully to the readers?

It really does matter.  Not a day goes by when the National Post or other media explain, in excruciating detail, how (say) a pro-traditional-marriage fellow is also identified as a member of (say) the Focus on the Family organization, and is clearly labeled as “a conservative”, and is also labeled as a “Christian”, who is may also be a member of what they obliquely describe as “the Christian Right”, and who possibly voted for George Bush or Stephen Harper or who supported “anti-abortion” candidates, and who they nefariously describe as someone who blogs at one conservative blog or another.  Their little game of “six degrees of conservative separation” extends to 80 degrees, and the reader is left fully informed as to their “conservative” politics.

So let’s be consistent.  I’ll fill in a couple of blanks for you, since the not-coincidentally near-bankrupt National Post chose not to.

Here’s some headlines (with my ever so slight modifications from their original wordage), which are absolutely related to the National Post picture set and article, as I see things:

•  Communist Hugo Chavez bashes Israel in Syria trip.

•  Naomi Klein and other communists and socialists and other anti-Israel and “social activists” like terrible actors Jane Fonda, actor Danny Glover, musician David Byrne, filmmaker John Greyson, and author Alice Walker all sign anti-Israel petition accusing the ridiculous and of course heavily Canadian government-funded Toronto Film Festival of being complicit in what they call “the Israeli propaganda machine”

Yes that last headline is rather long but it’s often very difficult to explain the abject stupidity of the various socialists and self-esteemed and self-anointed (and taxpayer-funded and government-reliant in varying degrees) nobs in the “arts”, and communist/socialist dictatorship Hugo Chavez-supporting extreme left-wing politics. At least without a federal government grant.

NOTES
Hugo Chavez is a self-described socialist/communist and literally boasts of being an enemy of America and Israel.

·  “…I’m a democratic socialist…”
—Naomi Klein in a “SocialistReview.org” article

·  “…For reference, Avi Lewis is the son of the former you’ve got to be kidding party’s Stephen Lewis, who sounds very much like a communist to me.  Stephen Lewis is the son of Federal NDP Leader David Lewis, who similarly sounds very much like a communist to me.  Stephen Lewis is married to Michele Landsberg, a feminist activist and former writer for the leftist Toronto Star, which is perhaps the most left-wing mainstream newspaper in North America, and the liberals’ Globe and Mail.  She sounds very much like a communist to me.  Not to be outdone, young Avi Lewis is married to far-left-wing feminist activist and Bush-hater Naomi Klein, daughter of an American draft dodger; and her brother is a director of the far left-wing Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (the “alternative” they speak of being global socialism and an end to capitalism as we know it, which sounds very much like communism to me).  Naomi Klein was also a Toronto Star writer.  She sounds very much like a communist to me.  …”
—Joel Johannesen in my own blog entry, (“CBC dismissively sneers at and insults top U.S. diplomat”)

·  “Naomi Klein claims that the Venezuelan government isn’t really censoring when it shuts down television stations. It’s ok to censor privately owned stations, says Naomi, as long as you’re the government. She brushes off condemnation by press freedom groups CPJ and RSF, ignores condemnation by IPA and IPI, and casts President Chavez – who recently described opposition political broadcasts “weapons of mass destruction” – as a “defender of free speech”. Never mind that Chavez controls the military – that’s a mere “paradigm” to Naomi. Words and pictures are the real weapons in her world: unrestrained speech is more dangerous than an army, and thus must be controlled at gunpoint.”
Vigilant TV article, based on and including quotes from her Guardian.co.uk column

·  “In January 2006, Harry Belafonte led a delegation of activists, including Glover and activist/professor Cornel West, in a meeting with President of Venezuela Hugo Chávez.”
Wikipedia

·  “…A 1972 visit to Hanoi during the Vietnam war where Fonda campaigned in favor of the communist regime and the subsequent release of several photographs of her atop a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun used against American air crews earned her the nickname “Hanoi Jane.” … Visited Sweden in September 2006 to support political party FI (Feministic Initiative) in the national election. FI focuses on issues that will benefit women and is led by the previous leader of Sweden’s communist party. … In 1984, her wealth, generated from acting, producing, and fitness videos was estimated at $50 million. …”

·  “If you understood what Communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that one day we would become Communist.”
Jane Fonda (speaking to students at the University of Michigan in 1970)

·  “In March 2009, Alice Walker traveled to Gaza along with a group of 60 other female activists from the anti-war group Code Pink…” [Also… “Conservative talk-show host Tucker Carlson criticized Pink leader Medea Benjamin for her support of Hugo Chávez…”]

There’s obviously a lot more that could be added here, especially in the case of the far-leftist Canadian, Naomi Klein (whom I’ve tried to document in my own “6 degrees of separation” as above, in lieu of the media (particularly the CBC, for obvious left-wing political reasons) ever doing it.  But also see my: “CBC to broadcast anti-religion polemic tonight on state-run “news” media”.  And “Someone who sounds like a communist to me endorses a Canadian soviet that sounds communist to me”.  And “Maclean’s beatifies their Prophet Suzuki”.  And “NDP Youth; Communist-sounding folks goose-step at anti-war “rally””

The fact that this left-wing anti-Israel protest occurs at a heavily taxpayer-funded “arts” festival (Canada department of 'Canadians can't live without government sponsorship for everything' logo!) chockablock full of abject socialist and anti-capitalist activist “artists” who all rely to one degree or another or even completely on government funding, is additional information I’d include in my newspaper, to fully inform Canadians.

UPDATE SATURDAY SEPT 5 2009

Washington Times is on it:

Toronto film festival ignites anti-Israel boycott

By Barry Brown

TORONTO| Canadian and American filmmakers lashed back Friday at what they described as an ” outrageous” boycott of the Toronto International Film Festival by some filmmakers and writers in protest of the event’s spotlight on filmmakers from Tel Aviv.

Producer, writer and director David Zucker (“Scary Movie,” “Naked Gun,” “Airplane!” ) denounced as “left-wing crazies” the individuals who signed a letter called ” The Toronto Declaration” to protest Israeli government policies.
