What? No award for Joseph Stalin?

Liberals in the Liberal Party, New Democratic Party, and now the Conservative Party will want to attend the liberal-fest at state-funded University of Western Ontario, as those fine liberals could find no better people in the whole of Canada to honor with unearned degrees than a bunch of fringe extreme left-wingers—notably one who is the pro-abortion set’s King, Doctor of death Henry Morgentaler. (Hat tip: Marc)

Some notable names missing from the list of extreme Canadian fringe left-wingers in this publicly-funded university’s honorees include the leader of the Communist Party of Canada (hilariously known as the “CPC”), Miguel Figueroa.

Damn good thing we have these people fighting to maintain a “separation of church and state” in Canada, so that they can continue to mix the state with extreme fringe left-wing politics at universities when it suits them.  Don’t worry, you won’t find any of those nefarious “Christmas” happy people’s tree festivus decorations at UWO.

Morgentaler to receive honorary UWO degree

The man who led the fight for women to choose abortion, will receive an honorary degree from the University of Western Ontario. And a spokesperson for a London-based anti-abortion group says it’s “unbelievable” the university will grant its highest honour to Dr. Henry Morgentaler.

“He’s the last person I’d think would be on anybody’s list whether you’re pro-life or not,” said Henry Lamb, former vice-president of Campaign Life Coalition.

“I have a real hard time with it because the (abortion) issue hasn’t even been properly debated in this country, and they want to make Henry Morgentaler a doctor of laws when there is no law?”

Morgentaler, who opened an abortion clinic in Montreal in 1968, led the pro-abortion fight until 1988 when the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the law that made abortion illegal unless three approved doctors agreed the birth would endanger the woman’s life or health.

The number of abortions in Canada rose sharply, but has levelled off at just more than 100,000 per year, with about one third performed in clinics.

Morgentaler continues to be active in the pro-abortion fight and operates six clinics across the country.

Spokespersons for the university and the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League could not be reached for comment last night.

Morgentaler will join nine others in receiving the honorary degrees, including:

– Doris Anderson, feminist leader and former editor of Chatelaine magazine.

Maude Barlow, Canadian crusader, author, policy critic and chairperson of the Council of Canadians;

Marc Lalonde, a cabinet minister under the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau;

– Bill Brock, retired banker who served as chairperson of Campaign Western, a $270-million fundraising campaign;

– Edward Malloy, president of the University of Notre Dame;

– Bohuslav Kymlicka, who served as dean of social sciences, in education and political science;

– Robert Colcleugh, a noted London plastic surgeon and former chair of UWO’s board of governors.

– Bessie Borwein, anatomy professor of 40 years at Western and special adviser to the vice-president of research.

– Jack Fairs, a UWO professor emeritus of kinesiology who taught and coached tennis, football and basketball starting in 1947.
