Here’s a paragraph from a Canadian Press rumour mill story (couched as hard news) about the firing by the independent Auditor-General Sheila Fraser of her subordinate, Johanne Gélinas, as written by rumour mill reporter Dennis Bueckert:
Rumours also swirled Tuesday about a personality conflict between Gelinas and Fraser, and possible political interference from the Conservatives.
That’s solid.
“Rumours”.
“swirled”.
“possible”.
Not only are the “sources” unnamed as they often aren’t when they’re designed to marginalize or denigrate conservatives, but in this case, officially speaking, the “rumours”, well, they “swirled” about. And the scientific fact of the matter is—it is “possible”.
I hear rumours all the time—or at least I could if I wanted to. It depends on if you mean rumours playing out in my head or for real, and then from whom those rumours are “swirling” about.
I should be a reporter. Here’s a rumour: the mainstream media is pathologically biased against conservatives and are abjectly left-wing and should never be taken seriously. This rumour: it is swirling about so it was worth printing here today.
