Is Ignatieff an Obama toady? An ideologue? Playing politics with war and national security?

image I wonder what the Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff’s firm, principled, well-thought-out “smart guy” position on Afghanistan would be if President Bush wanted to extend Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

Ignatieff seems more open to extending Afghan mission

Thurs. Feb 19
By The Canadian Press

OTTAWA – Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff seems to be opening the door a crack to extending Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan.

After meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, Ignatieff isn’t sounding quite so insistent that Parliament’s 2011 deadline for withdrawal of Canadian troops must be honoured.

Ignatieff says the Liberal party’s position “currently” is that the the combat mission must end in two years.

Aaaaand here’s an article regarding Ignatieff’s firm, principled, tough-guy stand, from…. YESTERDAY:

Ignatieff: Canada should keep Afghanistan pullout plan

Wed. Feb 18 – 4:46 AM

QUEBEC — Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says Canada should not prolong its military mission in Afghanistan even if U.S. President Barack Obama wants it to do so.

Ignatieff says he intends to press that point to Obama when he meets him in Ottawa on Thursday.

Even his CBC reported yesterday:

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday in Brossard, Que., Ignatieff reiterated that the Liberals would not accept an extension of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan, which is scheduled to end in February 2011.

Here’s an interesting part of a Q and A between the unswerving Liberal Michael (“Mr. Dithers”) Ignatieff and the London Free Press’s Christina Spencer, on January 20 2009:

Q: Let’s say Barack Obama comes North and he says to Canadians ‘I need you to extend your military presence in Afghanistan.’ What does Michael Ignatieff say?

A: Mr. President, we have been on duty in Afghanistan for the better part of a decade. We have made commitments to our allies and to NATO to pull out in 2011 and we will complete our military withdrawal from Afghanistan. Mr. President, we know a great deal about Afghanistan and we want to stay involved on the humanitarian and development side. We want to stay involved on the political side; we want to stay involved on the diplomatic side. But we feel we’ve made a decade-long contribution and we think it’s time to come home . . . my short answer is ‘No.’

Hey I wonder if the liberals’ news media division will jump down his throat, up his butt, and all over his entire being, about this policy of being Barack Obama’s water boy, you know, like Prime Minister Harper never was for President Bush even though they and all their poltical bosses kept saying he was.  I just so wonder.
