Who said this: “one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened”?

As I just posted our weekly Ann Coulter column and noticed it was on the Obama/Sotomayor choice for the Supreme Court (she’s against it!), I figured I’d dig up and post some additional gems I’ve found.

In her Princeton yearbook, Obama’s Supreme Court pick, the reverse racist and sexist and left-wing activist Sonia Sotomayor picked this quote (of all the quotes available in the world) from what we should presume is one of her heroes or influences or mentors, Norman Thomas“I am not the champion of lost causes, but the champion of causes not yet won.”

Who’s Norman Thomas?  Well Norman Thomas was a candidate several times for U.S. President in the 1930s.  For what party?  The Socialist Party of America, which was officially a Marxist party (though Thomas claims he was never quite a Marxist, per se).  A plaque in the Norman Thomas ‘05 Library reads: Norman M. Thomas, class of 1905. “I am not the champion of lost causes, but the champion of causes not yet won.”

There is a small Canadian connection here with regard to Canada’s Marxist, socialist party, Jack Layton’s NDP, a party which started life as the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation:  Wikipedia explains:  “…Although Thomas himself favored work to establish a broad Farmer-Labor Party upon the model of the Canadian Cooperative Commonwealth Federation,[13] he nonetheless remained supportive of the Militants and their vision of an “all-inclusive party,” which welcomed members of dissident communist organizations (including Lovestoneites and Trotskyists) and worked together with the Communist Party USA in joint Popular Front activities.”

I found this other, extremely revealing quote from Norman Thomas.  Please read this a few times:

“The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”

Trudeau with his pal, Communist Fidel Castro, who was a Trudeau pallbearer when Trudeau died. Here’s another Canadian connection, even if it is overly strident on my part:  Thomas died the year Pierre Trudeau gained power in Canada.  One could easily argue Thomas’s dream and augury has been kept alive by him and his liberal successors.  And the movement has made progress.  And most Canadians and Americans indeed don’t know it.

In case all you watch is the CBC or CTV or ABC or CBS or NBC or CTV or Global and you haven’t yet signed onto Fox News Channel, here’s some recent Sonia Sotomayor quotes, which are germane to her new job, should she get it:

•  A “court of appeals is where policy is made.  And I know — I know this is on tape, and I should never say that because we don’t make law. I know. O.K. I know.”

•  “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion (as a judge) than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
