Senator Durban sheepishly apologizes

The fact that half a nation has to (quite rightly) condemn this man and lay out in tens of thousands of words why it is he should be ashamed—before he finally, after many days of thinking about it, finally understands—well that speaks volumes about liberals and the Democratic Party doesn’t it?

Durbin Apologizes for Nazi, Gulag, Pol Pot Remarks

Sen. Dick Durbin went to the Senate floor late Tuesday to offer his apologies to anyone who may have been offended by his comparison of treatment of detainees at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Nazis, Soviet gulags and Cambodia’s Pol Pot.

“More than most people, a senator lives by his words … occasionally words fail us, occasionally we will fail words,” Durbin, D-Ill., said.

“I am sorry if anything I said caused any offense or pain to those who have such bitter memories of the Holocaust, the greatest moral tragedy of our time. Nothing, nothing should ever be said to demean or diminish that moral tragedy.

“I am also sorry if anything I said cast a negative light on our fine men and women in the military … I never ever intended any disrespect for them. Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line to them I extend my heartfelt apology,” Durbin said, choking on his words. […]

Just in case you need an excellent background and want a really good read, visit my new friend Megan Fox’s TheAbsurdReport.com web site again!  She’s written a fine piece on this affair complete with pictures.

Here’s the beginning of it but read the whole thing:

Dick Durbin; A living monument to the failure of public education

What a shame that a state that produced the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan also unleashed Dick Durbin onto the American people. I must apologize for the madcap fool I am forced to call my senator because I happen to live in Illinois. In case you’ve been out of the country, under a rock or detained in Guantanamo, here’s a recap of his outrageous remarks.

On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. ….. On another occasion, the (air conditioner) had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the tile floor.’ If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime—Pol Pot or others—that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.

I’ll give you a minute to recover your wits, which I know must be in a jumble after reading that claptrap.

I’m going to be generous when I surmise Durbin must be tremendously ignorant of the actual crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis, the Soviets, and Pol Pot. No doubt this is due to the sad lack of the fundamentals in our educational system. (Too many classes on the appropriate placement of condoms and not enough History lessons.) I intend to take Durbin back to school for a crash course in the facts. Pay attention, Dickie.  […]
