Though not attributed to the overtly liberal, anti-conservative bias in education (probably because the Sun is an overtly liberal newspaper), a story in the Vancouver Sun explains that enrollment in private schools is up while enrollment in public schools is down considerably.
B.C.‘s independent schools are continuing to gain students, despite a steady decline in the school-aged population that is hurting public schools in almost every part of the province.
Figures released Tuesday by the Education Ministry show that independent schools enrolled 62,200 full-time students this year, up from 60,554 last year – an increase of more than two per cent.
Their enrolments have climbed by 8.8 per cent during the past five years while public school numbers have fallen by 3.4 per cent. Their share of the total B.C. student population has also been edging upwards steadily.
[Also…] The number of students learning through on-line “cyberschools” soared by 31 per cent this year to 9,539 from 7,267 last year.
