OPEN POST for TV Debate Tuesday Jan 10 2006

I wonder if Paul Martin will announce that a Liberal government will cancel all future elections!

It makes governance easier!

EARLY COMMENT following the debate:

Nobody won this one.

Martin’s wild windmill hands fanned all the other leaders and kept them cool, which was helpful and energy efficient, but his lies stunk up the place and even his wildly flaying hands couldn’t clear the air.  He continually claimed that Canada is a rich country and “we can do better” on every major problem that’s been around for 12 years.  But I wonder why we aren’t doing better, then, since he’s been in a prime position of power for a good part of my life.  On many files, things are far, far worse, and in most files, no improvement at all whatsoever, at least none which they can take any credit for.

Layton was more animated and strayed off his used-car sales pitch a bit more.  But he lied by omission by claiming that everyone is corrupt except NDPers, where the NDP in BC, for example, was shown to be corrupt, some of whom were convicted of criminal offences, many others were investigated by police.  He also claimed that the two major parties are stuffed full of “lobbyists”, but failed to mention that the NDP is chock-full of huge organized labor unions which by and large own and operate them provincially and federally.

Duceppe at least twice confused Harper and Martin.  I expected far far more from Duceppe generally speaking.  He underperformed, but may not have lost anything.  I’m still confused as to why we engage in a debate with Duceppe in the room.

Harper was under serious fire but much of the fire was purely bogus, and I can only hope that Canadians saw that.  He wasn’t as sparkling as last night, but certainly held his own.
