Newest poll confirms previous poll; puts Conservatives AHEAD of Liberals

Val Sears, here’s some more of what you need to know, as the liberal-friendly media conducts a poll for themselves and provides themselves with results they didn’t like, and they put it in a story negatively headlined:

“Tories grab lead in poll”

…as if it wasn’t “theirs” to “grab”:

Conservatives 31 –  Liberals 28

  • The results suggest the Conservatives are the preferred option of 31 per cent of Canadians, 3 percentage points ahead of the Liberals, who are favoured by 28 per cent. The New Democrats are third with 20 per cent, while the Green Party is the first choice of 7 per cent.

  • The survey, conducted by the Strategic Counsel for The Globe and Mail and CTV News, finds that the new focus on the scandal has eroded Liberal support across the country, including in seat-laden Ontario.

  • The Liberal drop is particularly steep outside Quebec, where the Conservatives are first among 38 per cent of those polled, the Liberals second at 30 per cent and the New Democrats third at 23 per cent. In Ontario, the Liberals were preferred by 37 per cent, the Tories 35 per cent and the NDP 20 per cent.

  • Perhaps most disconcertingly for the Liberals, the poll finds that 71 per cent of voters believe that, even if Mr. Martin was not directly involved in the scandal, he should be held accountable for it.

  • On a related question, 60 per cent said they don’t believe Mr. Martin’s contention that he was not involved in the scandal, while only 33 per cent do believe him. Moreover, 62 per cent of those surveyed said Mr. Martin’s apologies for the scandal are a desperate effort to stay in office. Only 22 per cent believed the Liberal Party is beginning to accept responsibility for the program’s abuses.

  • The poll, conducted on Wednesday and Thursday of this week — the report was released on Tuesday — surveyed 1,000 voting-age Canadians and is accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
