Liberals were hoping to “rein in the [National] Post’s coverage”.
It’s from an article (spotted by eagle-eyed PTBC reader Maureen) at CTV.ca today and the Globe and Mail (they’re sisters!), that speaks about letters exchanged between Conrad Black (previous owner of the National Post through his Hollinger company), and Izzy Asper (CanWest Global, which eventually bought it out).
Chrétien coverage put Black and Asper at odds
[…] The sale closed on Nov. 16, 2000. CanWest paid $3.2-billion for dozens of papers including some of Canada’s largest dailies, such as the Vancouver Sun, Montreal Gazette and Ottawa Citizen.
CanWest also bought half of the National Post with Hollinger holding the remainder. However, the letters show that it wasn’t long before that partnership soured.
Mr. Asper’s son, David, a CanWest executive, began taking issue with the Post’s coverage of the so-called Shawinigate scandal, which involved allegations that Mr. Chrétien had improperly helped a business colleague get a loan from a federal agency for his hotel in Shawinigan. At the time, Lord Black and Mr. Chrétien were also sparring over his appointment to Britain’s upper chamber. The Aspers were long-time Liberals and many observers were convinced they would rein in the Post’s coverage. […]
“Rein in the Post’s coverage”. Oh my. That dang paper wasn’t a Liberal-appeasing suck-up paper—and hell’s bells—that ain’t liberal! Don’t let any o’ that non-liberal conservatism —or even balanced— junk leak out into society unchecked by the perfectly “reigned-in” and oh-so-sensible and balanced albeit Liberal Party suck-up liberal editors!
Too funny.
