Liberal-friendly CNN: “Conservatives will have little trouble winning”

Even the old liberal reliables south of the border between good and evil (Conservatives think both sides are “good”) are facing reality.  Even the always reliably liberal-friendly and reliably anti-conservative CNN is reporting that the Canadian liberals are failing in Canada’s election, in their Reuters report.

Canada’s conservatives leading in polls

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters)—Canada’s opposition Conservatives have taken a huge lead over the ruling Liberals and will have little trouble winning the January 23 election, two new polls showed Monday.

The Strategic Counsel poll for CTV and The Globe and Mail newspaper put support for the Conservatives at 40 percent, with the Liberals far behind at 27 percent.

The data shows that if the election were held now, the Liberals would be out of office after 12 years in power. The only question would be whether the Conservatives won a majority or a minority of the 308 seats in Parliament.

“It’s a Tory [Conservative] juggernaut,” the Strategic Counsel’s Tim Woolstencroft told CTV.

Separately, an EKOS Research Associates poll for The Toronto Star and La Presse showed the Conservatives had 38.6 percent support, compared with the Liberals at 27.2 percent. The NDP were at 18.6 percent.

This is up from an EKOS poll released Friday that showed the Conservatives with 37.6 percent, the Liberals at 28.3 percent and the NDP at 18.1 percent.

The campaign started in late November when Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin’s minority government was brought down over a kickback scandal.

Martin started with a slight lead but steadily lost ground amid a stumbling campaign, fresh scandals and voter fatigue.

Last week, the Liberals released a series of attack advertisements designed to convince Canadians that Conservative leader Stephen Harper was a right-wing extremist bent on curbing personal freedoms.

The latest polls indicate the commercials have had no effect at all.
