It’s official(ly a mess): Canada will not sign on to Ballistic Missile Defence

Pettigrew nervously answering questions about Liberals' refusal to defend CanadaBecause Canada is such a military powerhouse (at least that’s what the Liberals keep telling us), and in spite of Osama Bin Laden putting Canada on his list of countries to destroy: the Liberals remain faithful to their dithering, inexplicable determination to NOT do everything humanly possible to defence Canada and help America defend itself.

After being absolutely everywhere on this issue, they’re now officially on Carolyn Parrish’s side.  And Svend Robinson’s.  And Osama Bin Laden’s.  And Kim Jung Il’s.

Great company.  I choose George Bush.  Call me a nut (or an “idiot”).

OTTAWA (CP) – Canada will not sign on to the controversial U.S. missile defence program, Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew announced Thursday, ending months of political ambiguity.

The news completed a lengthy retreat for Prime Minister Paul Martin, who expressed support for the project in his early days in office, then qualified his support, and finally fell almost silent on the issue.

Pettigrew told the House of Commons that while the U.S. is pressing ahead with the missile system, “Canada . . . must act in its own interests and must determine where its priorities lie.”

“After careful consideration of the issue, we have decided that Canada will not participate in the U.S. ballistic missile defence system.”

He said the decision is based on sound policy principles rather than emotion, and added that it will not diminish co-operation with the U.S.

The move was immediately hailed by the NDP, but it is sure to be a major disappointment to the Bush administration.

Note that the story mentions nothing about the Conservative Party’s position on the matter.  That may be—and I’ll excuse the liberal media on this one file—because nobody on the face of the earth can even remotely figure out where in tarnation the Conservative Party stands on this issue.
