Great time to be in the glass business, as the stones break all the glass. It’s as though this is the first time a politician in a Canadian government has made a diplomatic gaffe. The fact that the Liberals and NDP want to even dare go there is risible. But it was the talk of the town today on Ottawa.
To liberals—both in government and the media—history often starts yesterday—it all depends on whether a conservative politician made a gaffe or a liberal did. Therefore history started yesterday.
Liberalvision CTV called it a “blunder”.
The state-owned CBC (never one to bung-up anything!) called it a “bungle”.
It’s a wonder the CBC didn’t add a “Gate” after “bungle”, as in “Conservative Bungle-Gate”. As we know, the revelation that Barack Obama is a double-speaking panderer (for those of you who didn’t already know it) was, by some mysterious force of nature, necessarily called “NAFTA-Gate” by the fair | and | balanced state-owned CBC (who proceeded to blame it squarely on Conservatives here, there, and everywhere, rather than liberals and Obama, in one of the year’s most monumental acrobatic spins on an actual story).
Whatever they declare that it is—a “blunder” or a “bungle” (which they did on both the CTV and on CBC… and then proceeded to ask experts if Bernier wasn’t in fact right on), it was a stupid, rookie diplomatic gaffe from a man proving himself once again to be far too weak a foreign affairs minister for such an important role. (This is the man who along with the prime Minister should be selling the virtues of Afghanistan war to all the many doubting, confused, misinformed Canadians. How’s that working out?)
The sentiment—poorly expressed as it was in public—was spot on, however. And everybody knows it.
