Liberal BBC: Italian election loser “concedes victory”. Berlusconi (quote) wins (unquote)

image  When “Conservatives” win, the liberal media goes into a tizzy.

Former Italian non-far-left leader Silvio Berlusconi appears set to win Italian elections today.  As you can see in the story (below) BBC explains to readers that the losing leftist leader concedes, um, victory.  This is a new concept, this “conceding victory”.  Also note the inexplicable air quotes (scare quotes?) around the word “wins” in their headline—as if to imply he stole the election like George Bush “stole” the U.S. election (wink!).

Berlusconi isn’t an overt socialist or communist, you see.  That’s scary!  Besides which his party is called People of Freedom (PDL).  Yowee.

Berlusconi ‘wins’ Italy election

Conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi is set to win Italy’s general election, partial results suggest. … The 71-year old told Italian TV difficult months lay ahead. His main rival, the centre-left leader Walter Veltroni, has already conceded victory.

Strangely, CNN.com’s Euroliberal division exclaimed the same thing in their headline, in the same way, with those same air quotes or scare quotes.  At least they got the conceding part right, writing that “Veltroni, who recently stepped down as mayor of Rome, delivered a concession speech live Monday night on Italian television.”

Seeking clarification on whether leftists had redefined the meaning of the word “wins” and “concedes” as they did “marriage” and “family” and “Canadian Values” in Canada, I read the Associated Press story at CTV.ca just to make sure I wasn’t drunk.  They seemed to get it right, without any air quotes or scare quotes around “wins”:

Silvio Berlusconi wins Italy’s national election

The Associated Press

ROME—Conservative leader Silvio Berlusconi reclaimed power in key U.S. ally Italy on Monday after clinching decisive victories in both houses of parliament. The 71-year-old media mogul was congratulated by his main rival, former Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni, who conceded defeat even though the vote counting was still under way.

Thinking that the CBC in Canada would follow the BBC and CNN air quote / scare quote and whom is conceding to whom festival, I found the CBC deftly skipped over the word “wins” and admitted that Berlusconi’s rival conceded to Berlusconi:  CBC.ca headline: “Berlusconi’s rival concedes defeat in Italian election”

The leftist lost.  Have we all got that straight now?
