Prime Minister Harper has officially notified the Liberal Party and their leaders, Liberal Frenchman Stephane Dion, Michael Ignatieff, and Ralph Goodale that he will sue them if they don’t renounce their previous remarks against him with regard to the Cadman allegations.
Specifically, it refers to remarks on the Liberal Party website which anybody, lawyer or not, would take as libelous.
The notice gives them until later this morning to properly respond, or face a legal battle. Since Dion and his Liberals have backed down and run away like little girls on just about every political fight so far, one might expect him and them to back down on this too, but this time, I think they might just risk it, given the lethargy of the legal system in Canada.
UPDATE – 10:05 AM PST:
Apparently Dona Cadman has made new remarks—a clarification of sorts—just within the past hour, in which she says she had spoken to Stephen Harper about the alleged million-dollar life insurance offer, and that he looked her in the eye and told her no such thing took place. She said she thoroughly believed him, and decided he was being truthful. It was on that basis that she chose to run as a Conservative candidate in Surrey.
Just why exactly this statement wasn’t made right from the outset is, well, it’s outrageous.
If she runs as a Conservative candidate, I won’t likely vote Conservative.
UPDATE – 10:50 AM PST:
We hear that the Liberals will not apologize or retract. The Liberals claim that the Harper Conservatives are essentially being big fat meaniepants, and that they are employing the tactic (oft-used by liberal-left bloggers, actually, which they don’t bother mentioning) called “libel chill”—in order to shut Liberals up and cut off “debate”. They claim that the Harper Conservatives should not do that, and instead do as they say they do—which is to “debate” this in the public. Yes, you see, Liberals making those allegedly smearing, defamatory remarks in public, which the Conservatives credibly claim seeks to defame and ruin the good reputation of a sitting prime minister …is what Liberals call good old honest “debate”.
“Debate.” Oh my. And pigs can fly.
Liberals live by a completely different set of rules than the rest of us.
UPDATE – 11:10 AM PST:
Here’s Dona Cadman’s news release from this morning:
March 3, 2008
Personal Statement by Dona Cadman
I’m a little bit surprised at the level of reaction to the disclosures in Tom Zytaruk’s book and I guess that’s probably because it was put to rest in my mind, when I discussed the matter with Stephen Harper, 2 ½ years ago. At that time, I recall specifically asking him if he was aware of a million dollar insurance policy offer, that upset Chuck so much.
He looked me straight in the eyes and told me he had no knowledge of an insurance policy offer. I knew he was telling me the truth; I could see it in his eyes. He said, yes he’d had some discussions with two individuals about asking Chuck to rejoin the party, but he’d told them they were wasting their time trying to convince Chuck.
From that point forward…. I didn’t regard it as a “Party” initiative, but rather; the overzealous indiscretion of a couple of individuals…. whose identity, Chuck never revealed to me.
It all comes back to my conversation with the Prime Minister…. 2 ½ years ago. I want to be perfectly clear in that regard. Chuck liked, respected and trusted Stephen Harper. I like, respect and trust Stephen Harper. If I didn’t believe in my heart, that he was telling me the truth…. I wouldn’t be running as the Conservative Candidate for Surrey North.

UPDATE – 11:21 AM PST:
After the Liberal Frenchman Stephane Dion stood up in the House this morning and repeated his effort to characterize the Prime Minister as a criminal, the Prime Minister stood up, and to uproarious applause, stated this fact:
”…This will prove to be, in court, the biggest mistake the leader of the liberal Party has ever made.”
The Liberal Frenchman appears to me a pathetic loser; fumbling, and nervously trying to keep alive the allegations even as their case falls apart in front of their faces.
