Welcome to 2006, Canada!
And here’s a suggestion for the Vancouver Sun: When the Conservatives “gain ground” but are still miles behind the Liberal Party, your headline should indeed read “Conservatives gain ground”, even if they only gained one point and the Liberals are still ahead by 10.
But when the Conservatives “gain ground” to they extent that they actually PULL AHEAD OF THE LIBERALS AND THE CONSERVATIVES ARE NOW IN THE LEAD, your headline should probably read “Conservatives poised to win”—or one of those headlines you’d used 87 times to suggest, ever-so-hopefully, that the Liberal Party was going to win again, even when they were barely ahead.
That way, readers like me and thousands or millions of others wouldn’t be forced to not take you seriously as the objective, fair and balanced journal and news reporting agency that you hold yourselves out to be.
Hope that helps!
If you don’t believe me, take a lesson from your big brother the National Post, today:
In other news, sort of, The National Post must be trying to fulfill a new year’s resolution to be kinder, more honest, and to not try to portray conservatives as people who look like devils, morons, idiots, or jacked-up cowboys. Check out this picture of a kind-looking, totally unscary and positively genial Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper in today’s National Post and other Canwest Global papers.
