Globe and Mail cites ghosts as sources in “news” story that they’re calling “journalism”

Globe and Mail cover 2008-01-29  Thanks to PTBC reader Ward B. for sending me this piece of junk journalism as written by Michael Valpy of the liberals’ Globe and Mail and which was allowed to be published by their professional “editors”.  And mind you it’s not tucked inside somewhere—it’s the main front-page story.

Don’t worry—the liberal media is always honest.  They know who they’re talking to and where they get their info.  That’s all you need to know.  Who cares if we’re talking about national security and possibly (hopefully?)  altering the outcome of possible elections by this sort of reporting?  And who cares about the lack of journalistic accountability when the very topic is just exactly that?

Detainee fallout: take few, free quickly

Details of new policy – and top soldier’s outrage – emerge as government ministers refuse comment, citing operational secrecy

…The information, provided to The Globe and Mail by sources

[not named sources, just trust ‘em!]

One well-placed source who spoke to The Globe and Mail Monday on condition of anonymity said…

[Said what?  “Boo!  I’m a ghost!”?]

Since the Canadian military’s decision to stop transferring detainees became known, there has been rife speculation

[what the Hell is “rife speculation”?  Is that an official term you learn when you take “journalism” classes?]

on what is being done with them, with three options being mentioned:..

[Oooh!  “Being mentioned”, huh?]

Transferring detainees to the Americans would be, in the words of one federal politician

[Not named?—That’s ironic!  Oh well—just trust ‘em!]

By the way, in a similar junk-reporting style, they “report” that:

Reports have also emerged that General Rick Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff, was furious with the Prime Minister’s Office’s handling of the military’s new policy and angrily telephoned Mr. Harper Friday night after letting it be known he was “tired of being used” in political controversy.

Today in Question Period, upon being finger-wagged by General Jack (“ass”) Layton, who apparently used the same Globe and Mail “source” in his angry, scowling, seething demand for honesty and openness and clarity and accountability of the Prime Minister, the Prime Minister—his name is Stephen Harper—look it up! —said that no such phone call took place, and the opposition ought to stop getting their information from “anonymous sources”.  Or, one presumes, the Globe and Mail

Here’s my transcription from Question Period:

“I think the leader of the NDP could do better than just rely simply on “anonymous sources” to ask his question.  For instance, these “anonymous sources” say that I had a telephone conversation on this subject with General Hillier last week.  In fact, Mr. Speaker, I haven’t had any [such] telephone conversation last week with General Hillier—I did talk to General Hillier last week Mr Speaker, not about prisoners, about the Manley Report and also to wish him well on a well-deserved vacation, with his wife, in the Caribbean… “
