In our News Release section, I’ve posted the latest from the good Canadian Coalition for Democracies. In it, they outline the testimony before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, given today by the CCD’s Naresh Raghubeer.
It’s good reading for those interested in Canada and its support of:
– Corrupt Governments
– Support of China (this really puzzles me to no end)
– Arab-Palestinian Aid
– Focused Developmental Aid
Here’s a tidbit from the part about supporting corrupt governments:
According to the International Policy Statement released by the previous government, Canada was prepared to focus a majority of its financial assistance on 25 countries. These are the countries of CIDA’s [Canadian International Development Agency] current aid programming. Of these nations, Freedom House[2] identified 19 as “dictatorships” or “unfree” nations. All 25 were identified as nations where corruption is rampant.
Not only did such facts fail to deter CIDA’s investment in these countries, but little to no effort was made to oblige local governments and aid agencies to demonstrate that monies reached the intended recipients and produced the intended results.
Billions of dollars are at stake, and important policy decisions as well of course.
