At presser: CTV Reporter tells optimistic Bank of Can Governor: “You seem to be overly optimistic!”

More proof that the media is fixated on and strain to be as effusive as possible in their negative doom ‘n gloom reporting on the economy (also known as “that damn capitalism”); and another indication (to me anyway) of their desire to damn well quash that incessant consumer confidence even in the face of the actual news facts being thrust in front of their faces.

At their press conference this morning, the Bank of Canada said, regarding the economy in Canada, that it will dive as it is now already expected to do (that’s old news), but—and this is the big new thing:  it will then start to recover rather strongly—as soon as July of this year, and into next year.

That’s the headline.  That’s the story.

image Therefore one CTV reporter, Bob Fife, CTV’s Ottawa Bureau Chief — a politics man, not an economist, who I always think of as Bob (“Well Lloyd we all know there are some knuckle-draggers in Mr. Harper’s caucus”) Fife — asked his question by TELLING the Bank of Canada Governor: “You seem to be overly optimistic!”  Not merely optimistic, mind you.  OVERLY optimistic.  See, there’s scant room for any optimism, in the mind of the esteemed politics Bureau Chief/reporter, but by golly there’s a line after which if you cross it, why you’re being OVERLY optimistic.  It’s a fun fact!

And then he asked the Governor (Harvard Bachelors degree in Economics and Oxford Master of Economics degree) to explain himself“What do you base such optimism on?!”   The Governor already explained it to the journalists but apparently Bob wasn’t listening, or he simply wasn’t buying it.  Fife would know, after all.

The governor explained it again.  I imagined the reporters writing down the Governor’s answer with lots of pursed lips and shaking of reporter heads back and forth.

Fife’s supplemental was to ask if the additional upcoming “stimulus spending” (something in the range of another $30 BILLION which is thought to be coming from the Harper Conservatives in next Tuesday’s budget) was going to be “significant enough? … Is that enough?…”.  There’s no way it could be “too much” or “a waste of taxpayer cash” or “wrong-headed” or that “has the potential to wreck our economy for untold years to come” or, say, “crazy”.

But I don’t want to pick on Bob (“Well Lloyd we all know there are some knuckle-draggers in Mr. Harper’s caucus”) Fife.  Soon after Fife’s admonition to the Bank of Canada governor, another reporter (unknown male) took his turn and told the B of C governor… “it seemed pretty optimistic!”,  before “asking his question”.
