Holy forgetting the actual meaning, Batman—or not caring what Remembrance Day is actually for in the first place. Check out this ad by an outfit called “bcclassified.com”, which if I’m not mistaken, places ads in newspapers across the province of BC (thanks to “KT” for spotting this):
“November 11th is the day to remember all the special people who have contributed to your world.”
Well no, actually, it is not. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, is the time the Armistice of World War I was signed in 1918, and is the day and time we observe two minutes of silence to remember members of the armed forces who were killed during war. It is to honor Canadian Forces men and women who gave their lives for Canada.
It is not an occasion to grab some extra cash for your business by claiming it is broader than that and includes “all the special people who have contributed to your world” (…and by the way, “consider sharing a picture!” …not because it’ll yield some extra cash for the biz, but because those folks are so special…)
As KT wrote,
“Joel:
I happened to come across the attached advertisement in our local newspaper. I couldn’t help but feel sad that this is what Remembrance Day has become. No doubt, they do this in the hopes of attracting revenue-generating ads, but to water down November 11 for this purpose just seems wrong-headed to me.”
Wrong-headed to be sure. And not to quibble with these crass and possibly ignorant opportunists, but their advise to “Phone Classified’s” to place your ad exposes them as grammatically challenged as well. There should be no apostrophe before the S in Classifieds. I sure hope they don’t make mistakes in the ads you place with them, but it looks like it’s a real possibility.
