New Sponsorship program needed—this one for the Liberal Party

Federally, big-L Liberals traditionally stick together when they’re under the gun because they believe power trumps all matters including those of stupid old morals and ethics.  But here we find a slight crack in the mold.  Maybe this Liberal hack needs a new Liberal contract to happy him up, and keep that Party together.

Ad man’s son testifies

MONTREAL (CP) – An ex-Liberal campaign worker who became rich from federal sponsorship contracts placed responsibility for apparent billing irregularities at the feet of his father and sister.

Eric Lafleur spent his first day at the sponsorship inquiry attempting to distance himself from his father, Jean Lafleur, and the patriarch’s claims that taxpayers always received value for the family’s lucrative sponsorship work.

Documents show Jean Lafleur’s former firm, Lafleur Communication Marketing, billed taxpayers for thousands of dollars in the mid-1990s in the name of an employee who apparently never worked for the company.

Eric Lafleur testified that the employee in question, Michel Octeau, worked for him and not his father.

“It’s a problem,” said Eric, 36, who supplied his father with sponsorship paraphernalia through his own firm while also working for Lafleur Communication.

“I don’t consider it to be appropriate. I don’t remember seeing Mr. Octeau working on sponsorship projects.”

Asked by commission counsel Guy Cornoyer who was in charge of billing at Lafleur Communication, the son replied: “Jean Lafleur.”

Eric Lafleur also acknowledged that his sister Julie was in charge of accounting at the firm when the apparent irregularities occurred.
