$60 in my pocket and I get to shoot my rifle?

Sweet!  Freedom and keeping my own hard-earned cash.  What a fine deal.

I’ve been waiting to take possession of a shiny long .22 rifle because I didn’t want to register it, and because I didn’t want to pay the $60 annual fee so that government bureaucrats could have a cushy job with benefits and a pension while I don’t have a cushy job with benefits or a pension, so this story came as good news:

Federal gov’t planning a gun amnesty: CTV

The Conservative government plans to gut the gun registry by granting an amnesty to rifle and shotgun owners, CTV News had learned.

As a result, the registry would only apply to handguns and automatic weapons.

The government is also expected to waive a $60 fee that more than 1.5 million Canadians must pay this year to renew their firearms registrations.

Sources tell CTV the regulatory changes to the registry will be fast-tracked through cabinet to avoid a messy parliamentary debate. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office reportedly want quick action on the file because it’s a key campaign promise.

Of course as usual, LIBERVISION news can’t just let a conservative thought sit there unattended to by an opposing liberal-left point of view.  (Can you imagine if one day, the “other” point of view they got for a liberal-left announcement was from a conservative?  That’d be weird!)

The Canadian Chiefs of Police Association and the Canadian Association of Professional Police Officers both back retention of the long-gun registry. Police use the registry thousands of times ber [sic] day.

One reason is that long guns have been used in several police killings, including the murders of four Mounties in Mayerthorpe, Alta. in 2005.

“Our last six or seven police officers were killed with long guns,” said Tony Cannavino of the Canadian Professional Police Association.

“That’s very sad, so that’s why we need those tools to make sure we keep Canada safe.”

But in non mainstream liberal media land, according to my own information, this is the actual fact of the matter as it pertains to the “murders of four Mounties in Mayerthorpe, Alta. in 2005”, which the big police union spokesman failed to let you in on at least in this spin-job rendered in the professional journalist news report in this mainstream LIBERALVISION media (translation: they failed, on purpose, to tell you all the facts, even though they knew these facts as well as I do):

According to RCMP search warrants, the following weapons were found on James Roszko’s farm after the shootings that left him and four Mounties dead.

1. HK-91 semi-auto serial
2. Black Beretta 9-mm handgun
3. .177-calibre air rifle
4. Remington .22-calibre [rimfire rifle that uses rifle cartridges]
5. 12-gauge Winchester 1300 Defender shotgun
6. Husqvarna .308 Winchester, Model 9000
7. Lee Enfield .303-calibre rifle
8. Lee Enfield .303-calibre rifle 4MKI [FRT]
9. .308-calibre ERT rifle [a mystery weapon]
10. 12- gauge Remington shotgun, Winchester Model 870 [poor description—probably should be Remington 870]
11. 300 Wing Mag Winchester, bolt rifle serial
12. “Delta Storm” crossbow

Oh and also, Roszko had been banned by the courts from owning weapons five years earlier.  Small detail.

UPDATE:  Thanks to reader Peter C. who, has vast gun knowledge, and who took the time to email me some corrections to the above list (corrections indicated in square brackets above) and added this note: “Two VERY important facts the RCMP and liberal government didn’t tell you or anyone about the HK-91 semi-auto rifle James Roszko used to kill the 4 mounties was that this particular make and model of rifle was prohibited way back in the mid 90’s and only specially licenced individuals have been able to own such a firearm since then.  AND Roszko’s HK-91 was NOT registered.”
