UPDATED 9:40 AM PDT
I noticed the new United Nations “Human Rights Council” meets today. Watch for them to start clamping down on Iran, Cuba, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Burma, Sudan, and North Korea. Just kidding! It’s the U.N.!
Forty-seven countries were elected to sit on the council. The 190 U.N. member nations voted to decide what countries would have delegates on the Human Rights Council.
The old Human Rights Council had Libya as its chairman in 2003. Colonel Moammar al-Ghadafi’s Libya. Yes Libya. Once again that’s Libya. Officially the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya
• That bastion of human rights Saudi Arabia got the votes of 126 countries and is now a member in good standing.
• Fifty-eight countries voted for human rights Mecca Iran—because of all the countries in the world, Iran is well-known to have superb human rights especially toward women and humans, and it was felt by the U.N. liberals that Iran should dictate to the rest of the world including the U.S.A. and Canada how to manage its human rights affairs. Sadly for the Iranian Islamist dictators who run Iran, they didn’t garner quite enough votes (need 96).
• Not surprisingly, Iraq, where actual human rights laws are now being formed and modelled on non fascist non-terrorist nations, got fewer votes than Iran: 52.
• China got 146 votes. That’s practically every nation. China is a champion of human rights.
• Cuba got elected. 135 votes.
• The link to check the number of votes that Canada got doesn’t work. Thanks U.N.
• The United States voted against the creation of the Human Rights Council. I can’t understand why. The U.S. did pledge to pay for it though.
Here’s parts of Iran’s “Pledge” (read the whole thing—takes mere days to read but it’s funny) (PDF):
UPDATE:
Kofi Annan fixed his web site and I can now report that Canada got 130 votes. (A few more than Saudi Arabia which got 126)!
Here’s the list of countries:
