“The rot runs deep” says the National Post about the Liberal Party

Like every media outlet in the nation, the National Post has their take on the Liberal Party corruption inquiry.  They muse about the Liberals being defeated as a result of all of this, but of course I mused about that prior to last election and look what happened!

But in light of my previous blog entry (just below) about the Alberta Liberals being so embarrassed to have the name “Liberal” attached to their party that they’re considering changing their party’s name, I posed the question asking whether the federal wing might now consider do the same.  It seems the National Post missed the opportunity to suggest it, but they do lean heavily in favour of the Liberals reinventing themselves from the ground up.

Although I’d love for people to not vote for the Liberals,  I didn’t mean that the solution was to simply drop the name “Liberal!”  Nonono!  Don’t vote for liberals!  But anyway…

But suffice it to say that if even half of the tantalizing disclosures supposedly revealed to Judge Gomery are shown to be true, the governing Liberals will be dealt a stunning blow. It is hardly a surprise that the party’s operatives are already working feverishly to contain the fallout.

[…] Whether the Liberals can recover from Gomery’s inquiry is an open question. Some of our sources who have heard last week’s testimony are convinced they cannot—and that voter revulsion will lead to a Bloc Quebecois takeover of Quebec, and a Conservative rout everywhere else. Even many Liberals are expected to jump ship, so disgusted are they at the sins committed in their party’s name. Better to rebuild under a new leader and ethos, the theory goes, than try to graft new personalities onto the existing rot-infested frame.

[…] But whether the Liberals win the coming election or not, one thing is certain: They must reinvent themselves substantively before Canadians will trust them again. In most cases, parties must lose power before such a reinvention project can begin. We’ll see whether the Liberals will present an exception to this rule.
