“Stimulus spending” on national defence? Only not in Canada.

One of the funnest thing you can do with a liberal or further leftist here in North America is to suggest that “stimulus spending” be directed toward something useful, like national defence —fighter jets and submarines and such.

image It’s one of the most blatant proofs you can find that liberals and further leftists aren’t really concerned about “stimulus spending” in order to (as they claim) “fix” the broken—capitalist-only!—part of the economy, but rather they’re just really just interested in using this fabulous “opportunity” to build their socialist dreams and build that yummy bigger government they dream about and increase all those fabulous social programs,  and to increase government spending and of course taxation in general, especially for “the rich” (actual quote from Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel:  “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste … Things that we had postponed for too long, that were long-term, are now immediate and must be dealt with. This crisis provides the opportunity for us to do things that you could not do before”), is when you suggest that the government spend billions more on needed national defence upgrades.  You tell them that it would (a) create jobs, (b) stimulate those “shovel-ready projects”, (c) help defend our country (d) help spread democracy and human rights abroad, and more….

Suddenly, your leftist opponent balks at “stimulus spending”, or at least that kind of “stimulus spending”.  Then your liberal opponent will likely say “you’re stupid!”, and run away like a little girl.  It reminds me of when it’s a blizzard outside, and they suddenly do a switcheroo in the wording of their boring mantra from “man-made global warming” to “climate change”.

Joel,

I always look at Australia as similar to Canada, being democratic, Christan and all that, although smaller in population. I envy their Blackhawk helicopters. Now with a left of centre government thay are contemplating a huge military build up! If only Harper et al would get it the way the Aussies do!

By the way – Crowder is amazing!

White paper orders huge military build-up

Patrick Walters, National security editor | April 25, 2009
Article from:  The Australian

[Prime Minister of Australia] Kevin Rudd is set to announce Australia’s biggest military build-up since World War II, led by a multi-billion-dollar investment in maritime defence, including 100 new F-35 fighters, a doubling of the submarine fleet, and powerful new surface warships.

The new defence white paper will outline plans for a fundamental shake-up of Australia’s defence organisation to ensure that the nation can meet what the Prime Minister sees as a far more challenging and uncertain security outlook in Asia over the next two decades.

China’s steadily growing military might and the prospect of sharper strategic competition among Asia’s great powers are driving the maritime build-up, which will see new-generation submarines and warships equipped with cruise missiles, and a big new investment in anti-submarine warfare and electronic warfare platforms, including new naval helicopters. …
