A 79-year-old liberal RINO Senator will be announcing that he’s joining the Democrats later today. That simply makes what we all knew official. Arlen Specter, who often votes with the Democrats, is a liberal. He should be a Democrat.
He also happens to know he can’t win the Republican primary nomination in his upcoming race in his state of Pennsylvania because he’s up against a conservative Republican. So he’s not really leaving his party and joining the opposition on any sort of “principle”, he’s leaving for pure political expediency. Charming.
I think the many liberals who control the Conservative Party in Canada should do the same: move to their home in the Liberal Party. On principle. And for that matter, many Liberals should drop the farce and join the Socialist Party or Layton’s you’ve got to be kidding party (are they still called the “NDP”?!). Actually, come to think of it, several Conservatives could join Layton’s ranks and fit right in.
Specter says he’s switching from GOP to Democrats
WASHINGTON (AP) – Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter disclosed plans Tuesday to switch parties, a move intended to boost his chances of winning re-election next year that will also push Democrats closer to a 60-vote filibuster-resistant majority.

Specter faced an extraordinarily difficult re-election challenge in his home state in 2010, having first to confront a challenge from his right in the Republican primary before pivoting to a general election campaign against a Democrat.
“I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate,” he said in the statement. …
This brings Obama’s Senate closer to a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. And as such, they’ll be able to control the means of production and create their planned economy much more easily.
