I get no comfort in knowing that Reuters matches the negative current running through my blog posts concerning Canada’s delayed reaction in deploying the “DART” team. But I know liberals will finally think there’s some validity in my sentiment if Reuters says nearly the exact, identical, same thing, so:
I wrote (among other things, and with a great deal more sarcasm than just this):
The DART team will be getting there by rented RUSSIAN planes. They will be there on Saturday. Nearly two WEEKS after the disaster.
Canada Finally Decides to Send Rapid Team to Asia
The Canadian government decided on Monday to dispatch its military rapid response team to Sri Lanka, but it will not arrive until about two weeks after the tsunami. … [Canadian Forces] have chartered two Antonov transport planes which will leave on Thursday night and arrive in Colombo on Saturday.
By the way, according to the Reuters story, the cost of the Antonovs, C$15 million to C$20 million, will come out of the C$80 million in tsunami aid that Martin had announced on Sunday.
I imagine if the Americans took the cost of their aircraft carriers, fleet of jets and planes, helicopters, and military personnel into account, their initial $350 ($US) would have been gone six hours after the announcement. Clearly their massive military expenses are on top of the cash. That interesting difference amounts to untold millions of dollars in aid value and more importantly, life-saving value.
