David Suzuki missed this in his research I think. So did every single Canadian Liberal, and of course all the members of the you’ve got to be kidding party. They won’t see this article about it today either because it wasn’t in the “Arts and Feelings” section of the Toronto Star.
Floating mats of green fern covered warm Arctic waters, report claims
Margaret Munro, CanWest News Service
Published: Thursday, June 01, 2006The high Arctic may be icy white today but it was once green with floating mats of ferns. Even stranger, “super-greenhouse” conditions heated waters near the North Pole to 23 C before the Arctic entered the frigid state that has prevailed for the last 55 million years.
A remarkable record of the Arctic’s past, published by an international team in the journal Nature today, is the most continuous and detailed look yet at the region’s wild climactic swings.
[…] The sediments reveal the surface waters of the Arctic Ocean 55 million years ago were as warm as 18 C—comparable to the waters off the coast of France today.
Then came a burst of intense warming in the “super-greenhouse” period that saw sea temperatures soar to 23 C.
The researchers say the heat wave was triggered in part by carbon loading into the atmosphere, possibly from volcanoes or from the release of underwater stores of methane gas.

I guess maybe they had a liberal-left world government and a Kyoto Accord 55 million years ago, and those good folks cleaned all that up for us. Maybe Al Gore was President. And now we’re right back to square one. When will we ever learn?!
