The word “fraud” and the word “liberal” are going hand-in-hand too often these days considering liberals run every facet of our lives in Canada.
Sorbara steps down: Finance Minister named in RCMP fraud warrant
TORONTO – Ontario Finance Minister Greg Sorbara resigned last night after it was revealed the RCMP’s white-collar crime unit is investigating allegations he defrauded investors and creditors of building supplies manufacturer Royal Group Technologies Ltd.
“While I have no idea as to what the allegations are or the facts on which they are based, my responsibility as a Minister of the Crown is to step aside pending a determination of the matters alleged in the warrant,” Mr. Sorbara said in a written statement issued after 10 p.m.
Mr. Sorbara said last night he had asked for a meeting with the RCMP.
“The power of the police is very great indeed,” he said. “That is appropriate in a democratic society like ours. But a mistake can have devastating consequences and here a devastating mistake has been made. I want to tell you that I intend to get to the bottom of that. And meanwhile it’s appropriate for me to step aside from my responsibilities.”
Mr. Sorbara’s resignation from his responsibilities as finance minister and chairman of the management board comes as the McGuinty government prepares to deliver a Throne Speech today that the Liberals hope can turn around their fortunes—recent polls show them with about the same amount of public support as the Tories.
