Released on a Friday afternoon, huh? Wow. How not transparent of you!
Anybody who has followed politics for more than a week knows that bad news is released on Friday afternoon, because, they think, nobody is paying attention and will forget about it over the weekend where there is no water cooler to gather around. But usually it’s the government who is doing the news releasing. In this case, we’re led to believe it’s simply a private polling firm who did the poll. Usually polling firms want all the publicity they can possibly get. So that’s odd.
This is just the latest of two or three polls showing, on balance, that the Conservatives are making solid gains and are within striking distance of the liberal-left coalition …or as liberal-lefties would say, likening it to the dreaded American-led victory for freedom and democracy in Iraq, “It’s a quagmire! A quagmire!” Then of course they demand that the “exit strategy” is employed. If I understand my many lovely emails from liberals correctly, that involves leaving Canada, you nasty conservative Canadian, move to Texas. (It’s really easy to understand the strategy because that’s exactly what they say to me only with more swearing).
And frankly, it may be the only way to stop this Conservatives catching up “quagmire”.
Note the length of the National Post story, below, and the short shrift paid to it, compared to the lengthy analysis we’ve seen over and over and over in headlines and newspaper columns from liberal-leftists and “news articles” from “reporters” like:
“Conservatives Failing To Connect With Voters”
“Conservative Falling Apart Amid Dismal Polls”
“People Hate Scary Conservatives”
“Conservatives A Bunch Of Nut Jobs”
“Canadian Media is Fair and Balanced, It’s Harper Who Isn’t”
…and on and on and on, all of the articles replete with dire predictions for the horrible plight of the burgeoning Conservative Party of Canada. Will Peter MacKay leave?; Are Quebec Conservatives demanding Harper’s resignation?; Is there a major split of mammoth proportions within the Conservative Party?; Thems Conservatives is Full Of Christians! And on and on, ad nauseam, ad infinitum, each with 1500 words of analysis and quotes from “sources” and “unnamed sources” and “top Conservative Party officials” and those “who asked not to be named”.
And the attitude continues today with the absolute barest minimum-size article, and what appears to be
analysis
excuses for the Liberal Party. This newest Pollara poll (and others not mentioned including the Conservative Party’s own internal poll which mirrors these findings) show the Conservatives’ gains in popularity—to well within striking distance of the Liberals and their NDP poodles. The Canadian Press-written National Post article begins:
Recent spending scandals may have hurt the federal Liberals in the eyes of voters, a new poll indicates.
Well that “may” be it, and a damn fine conjecture, there, but I think it’s deeper than that, personally. And I don’t think its manifestly “Liberals” who have been feeling hurt, lately, but I understand your sadness for them, coming from where you do. No I think it’s Canadians who have felt hurt, but whatever, I’m just one.
Then it goes on to tell us that the poll was conducted in late September—before all the most unpalatable news has actually filtered through the media yet. This weekend or next week would be a good time to poll Canadians.
Here’s the rest of the story—yes this is the whole story!—which serves to entirely underplay the significance of the story, and even serves up excuses for the Liberal Party. No 1500 word analysis, no doomsday scenario for the Liberal Party (who were “hurt”—poor things):

Despite failing to gain any ground in crucial Ontario ridings, Pollara says Stephen Harper’s Conservatives saw their national popular support numbers inch to within six percentage points of the Liberals in late September.
Pollara surveys conducted over the summer months indicated a 10-to 12-percentage point gap between the Grits and Tories.
But the Paul Martin government has been hammered recently by controversy over David Dingwall.
Dingwall quit his job as president of the Royal Canadian Mint amid allegations of overspending and improper lobbying.
Did you notice the explanation? It’s like code for don’t worry, this will go away. “But the Paul Martin government has been hammered recently by controversy over David Dingwall,” you see. Not to worry!
It goes without saying, as we’ve already seen it happen: liberal-friendly media firms from all over will invent, in concert with those wily liberal media reporters, all sorts of “hidden agenda”-quality anti-Conservative nuggets to use in negative anti-Conservative stories in the coming days and weeks up to the election. In addition, we should see all manner of happy dancing liberals announcing copious amounts of cash! cash! cash! to all you good Canucks, the source of which will be “The Liberals”, and which will serve to further aid your life and prevent you from having to do anything on your own in favor of letting the state do it for you—and pay for it too, thus making it “free” as you know.
