The NDP constantly confuse me—what with their pierced-nippled supporters, their MP’s pro-pot-smoking stance, all-gay, all-day rhetoric, socialism, sucking up to big labor unions, pro-abortion, pro-Cuba, anti-American… and now the whole “whip” thing. I would have thought for sure they enjoyed the whip.
And yet I find that some don’t dig the whip.
A GROUP OF New Democrat MPs are taking on leader Jack Layton for “whipping” them to vote the party line on same-sex marriage and demanding that he drop the order. It’s the latest twist in the increasingly divisive debate taking place inside Canada’s major political parties on the issue of same-sex marriage.
While 18 of the 19 MPs in Layton’s caucus are expected to vote in favour of legislation extending marriage to gay and lesbian couples, they are unhappy with the NDP leader’s undemocratic approach to the issue.
“I will not accept the whipped vote on this or any other issue and I’ve told Jack that,” said Nova Scotia MP Peter Stoffer. “And I’m not using the excuse to say to people, there’s a whipped vote, I have no choice but to vote for it. That’s nonsense, that’s a cop-out.”
Stoffer suggested to Sun Media that Layton is getting an earful from some of his own MPs.
“People like Tony Martin and others, we’re basically saying, take the whip off. Now I don’t know if it’s off or not, but I will not accept the whipped vote under any circumstance,” Stoffer said.
