Liberals are running so fast and in so many directions, they’re crashing into walls.
Liberal Minister of Gay Marriage Irwin Cotler says it was all his idea to start questioning how his Liberals appoint judges to Canada’s judicial division of the Liberal Party, after tough questions were raised via the Gomery Inquiry into Liberal Party corruption.
Federal justice minister seeks advice amid claims of judicial cronyism
OTTAWA (CP) – Justice Minister Irwin Cotler has called a meeting of experts to discuss how the selection of federal judges can be improved.
Talks with leaders of judicial advisory committees from across Canada are tentatively planned for early June.
But Cotler says he first requested the brainstorming session long before claims of related cronyism rocked the already teetering Liberal government.
“I asked for this some time ago – before all this broke,” Cotler said in an interview with The Canadian Press.
Is that right?! I distinctly remember Irwin Cotler saying weeks ago that everything was on the up and up and all was tickity-boo. Nothing wrong here, folks, move on, he implied.
Sure enough, the story I read said this about that:
Cotler has until now dismissed suggestions of judicial patronage, saying candidates are appointed on merit regardless of political ties.
But probes by the Montreal Gazette and CanWest News Service found a fiscal thread that links the majority of appointments. They showed that about 60 per cent of lawyers named to the bench since 2000 in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan donated to the Liberals in the years just before landing the $220,000-a-year jobs.
By contrast, just a handful of new judges had donated exclusively to the Conservatives or New Democrats in the same period.
What a coinkidink.
