The current chairman of Canwest Global‘s board, and ex-Liberal Premier of New Brunswick, Frank McKenna, has been picked by Liberal Prime Minister Paul (“we lead the world”) Martin to be the new Canadian Ambassador to the United States.
Canwest Global owns most of the newspapers in Canada including both of the Vancouver dailies, the National Post, and all of those within what internet users know as the “canada.com” family of newspapers. In addition, they own the Global TV network.
Canwest Global is the empire started by “Izzy” Asper—himself once a Liberal Party candidate in Manitoba, and later a Liberal Party honcho. It is now run by his son.
McKenna serves on the boards of eight other companies as well. He will have to resign from all of those boards in order to assume the Ambassadorship in Washington.
McKenna considered running for leadership of the federal Liberal Party but for some reason changed his mind. Now he’s is getting this plumb position. Which one might say is perfectly normal. But it isn’t. McKenna will be the first former politician to ever serve in that role.
Liberals, liberals, everywhere.
