Voter turnout in the Iraq elections at the end of the month are expected to be 50%.
Not bad for a country in which there are actual death threats leveled against anyone who dares to exercise this U.S.-driven right to vote in free elections for the first time. (Prior to the U.S. invasion, under Saddam Hussein, people merely had their ears amputated, or sometimes one eye, if they didn’t vote for the only candidate, Saddam Hussein. Michael Moore left that tidbit of info on the cutting room floor with all his burger wrappers).
To put it into perspective, in the United States, in a drive to get the left-wing vote out, Sean (“Puff Daddy” or “P-Diddy” or P-Diddly-Squat” or whatever) Combs embarked on a huge media-driven campaign in which the main thrust, emblazoned in huge letters on huge oversized t-shirts, was, “Vote Or Die”.
Apparently Diddly missed the irony or the juxtaposition.
Nonetheless, only 61% voted in Canada’s last election under no threat of death (of course the “Stop Harper!” pierced nipple set thought there was an actual threat of death); and less than that in the U.S. Vote Or Die election.
