Here’s how the National Post story starts:
TORONTO – Ontario’s Liberal government will use the bulk of a $3-billion windfall to pump money into Toronto—largely for transit and other projects—allowing the province to remain in deficit at least another year, Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced in yesterday’s provincial budget.
You see, the Liberals’ fiscal prudence—which consists of overtaxing and even then spending far more than they’re taking in —allows them to remain in deficit. Oh thank God. Being absolutely horrible forecasters and managers of the province’s treasure allows them to stay in deficit.
Deficits used to be bad. Now they’re good. Mission accomplished. Good on ya, liberals. You’re exonerated!
As proof of their forecasting prowess (shades of Team Chretien/ Martin/ Hargrove/ CBC/ Julie Van Dusen):
In total, Ontario collected $2.25-billion more in 2005 than it expected. The majority of those funds, $1-billion, came from personal income taxes.
Another $480-million came from corporate taxes.
This year’s tax cuts for people and business: Zilch.
I don’t imagine this will be portrayed in the media as “allowing the province” to continue to “service” the people by “screwing” them out of their money in order to “prop up a Liberal government bent on power”.
