The article below is actually part of the article referred to in my previous blog entry, but I found it worthy of a separate entry, because I nearly choked on my cup o’ jo and spit it on my new monitor when I read it.
In the latter part of the article, they lay out a section with the sub-headline reading “How the Netherlands has become less liberal”.
My first inclination was to happily intone that the “progressive” Dutch experiment with their country through liberal laws, welfare-state social programs, and liberal social policies which Canada repeatedly tries to emulate despite proof of their abject failures, was admitting its failures and grabbing some “sense”. They would have a long way to go, if it’s possible to reverse it at all.
But the reporter, Anthony Browne, informs us thus: “The Netherlands is still liberal in some ways, however.”
Gee. Ya think?
He goes on: “In 2001, the country became the first in the world to legalise gay marriages. The Netherlands still has liberal rules on euthanasia, recently extending it to severely handicapped babies and children.”
Abortion is already legal here in Canada right up to the ninth month—there are absolutely no limits at all whatsoever in Canada. Liberals are in favor of this. But wait until you can kill babies and little children if you don’t like them or they have what you perceive to be some kind of “problem”. Of course the killing only occurs after a private meeting between the parents and a doctor, much like an abortion… so not to worry!
I’m not sure if Canada’s liberals are there yet (some no doubt are), but that’s “progressive”! So I imagine they’ll all come around eventually. ’Specially if the Dutch are doing it!
Here’s the other ways the country is becoming “less liberal” according to the reporter, all of which make perfect sense and which Canada should emulate to become less liberal but won’t without a change of government:
How the Netherlands has become less liberal:
Immigrants must pass an exam on Dutch language and culture before being allowed to move to the Netherlands. That does not apply to immigrants from US, Canada, Australia, Japan and other EU states.
Legal immigrants already there must take a Dutch language course at their own expense.
Immigrants guilty of any minor crime, such as shoplifting, during their first three years in the country can be deported.
People can bring in a husband or wife only once they are 24 years old, and do not depend on welfare benefits. The measures are aimed at curbing international arranged marriages.
26,000 illegal immigrants are being deported, some of whom have been in the country for ten years and have established families.
Clampdown on foreign imams working in mosques. They must show their appreciation of Dutch values.
Increase in sentences for a range of crimes, and introduction of “zero tolerance” policing to cities such as Rotterdam.
Tightening of rules on cannabis-selling coffee-shops and zero-tolerance approach to infringements. About half the coffee shops in Amsterdam have closed.
