Sounding upbeat and positive for the future, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says `Historic breakthrough’ is possible now that Arafat is out of the way.
Personally, with the upcoming Palestinian election turning into more of a farce than anything; and the current “frontrunner” behaving with only scant deviation from Arafat’s habit of publicly condemning Palestinian atrocities while offering tacit encouragement, so far, I can only hope Sharon employs a whole lot of Ronald Reagan’s dictum “trust but verify” with an amplitude factor of ten.
Declaring that an opportunity for a “historic breakthrough” with the Palestinians is at hand after the death of Yasser Arafat, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Thursday that Israel is prepared to coordinate its planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip with a new Palestinian government and that this could lead to a broader peace agreement.
Sharon’s upbeat comments were the latest expression of optimism about prospects for progress in the aftermath of Arafat’s death last month, and it coincided with a diplomatic push to revive peace talks.
“The biggest and most genuine opportunity to build a new and different relationship with the Palestinians was created with the passing of Yasser Arafat, who was the main obstacle to peace,” Sharon said in an address to the annual Herzliya Conference on security and strategy.
