The liberals and the Liberal Party Prime Minister is not sending my country’s aid the way I want him to. He’s not helping our neighbour—our friends and family and allies and partner —the way I would have him do it for my country. He is not representing my country adequately. He’s embarrassing me. He’s shaming me and my country.
Where are our naval ships right now? Our hospital ships? Where are our helicopters? Where is our fleet of helicopter/aircraft landing carriers at this time? Where is our army’s facilities, which we’ve built-up and maintained over our history for worldwide peaceful operations and aid and assistance for which the Liberals constantly say “we lead the world”?
Where are they? Are they underway right now? Are they on the way to Alabama and Louisiana in anticipation—just in case? Are planes and helicopters being sent down there right now in anticipation of their request for duty?
No.
No? Why not? Where is my country?
Prime Minister Paul Martin yesterday defended his response to Hurricane Katrina, insisting the country has been ready to lend a hand for days.
Stung by criticism he reacted slowly in offering Canadian assistance, Martin said he’d actually contacted the White House last weekend before the hurricane made landfall.
[…] White House spokesman Scott McLellan said a number of countries have offered aid.
[…] With offers from the four corners of the globe pouring in, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has decided “no offer that can help alleviate the suffering of the people in the afflicted area will be refused,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said yesterday. […]
All I see is abject reluctance. Hedging our bets, hoping that we won’t have to bother deploying our blissfully unused military assets to help the Americans in desperate need for our help—their former brother’s help—their former most reliable and trusted partner’s help. What I see is the liberal-left once again saying, “the Americans deserve whatever comes their way”.
If our assets had been sent immediately, they’d already be there. If they weren’t needed in the end, a situation which I highly doubt, it would at least have shown how much we care. It could have changed everything between our two countries. And it would have shown the world that we do indeed “lead the world”. Instead, we’ve shown the world little more than the fact that we’re laggards. Leading nothing.
