I’m starting to think that soon it will be Canadian government elites and sundry Liberal Party appointed state employees—especially the minty ones who are loyal to what the media has taken to calling “the natural ruling party” in some obscure and yet huge, blatant, overt political bias—who are going to be the nation’s wealthy ones.
Endowed with riches like huge incomes, outrageous pensions and benefits, severance payouts even if you screw the nation, fine first-class travel anywhere anytime on private luxury jets, fine accommodations the world over, allowances for every single expense in life. All that while the ones who should be in that position—the stupid cows who invent things; or create businesses; or risk it all to start families, and then work their butts off paying ridiculously high taxes; the ones literally asking what they can do for their country instead of asking what their country can do for them; and the ones making Canada a better country as a general matter despite the government —pay for it.
This “Canada” situation sort of reminds me of the old Soviet Union. The government officials were the ones driving around in fancy cars and living in all the nice homes—homes stocked with the finest foods. Their kids went to the best schools and had nice clothes. They had exclusive healthcare facilities. Even exclusive holiday resorts. They retired early and well. Of course they were all for “equality” too.
MPs get relief from rising gas prices
‘Two sets of rules’
OTTAWA – MPs and public servants have been quietly awarded a 10% hike in their travel allowances in response to soaring gas prices, while the government refuses to cut federal fuel taxes to help the driving public. The increase, to 50.6 cents a kilometre from 46 cents for MPs, with a similar range for public servants, would result in an allowance of $400 for a return trip by car from Ottawa to Toronto, excluding costs for meals and lodging.
The hike came to light in a memo Commons Speaker Peter Milliken circulated to all MPs yesterday, alerting them to the fact their allowances would rise to match Treasury Board rates for bureaucrats the government increased last Saturday.
[…] By coincidence, the head of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation arrived on Parliament Hill yesterday to present 35,000 signatures to the Conservative party to table in the Commons urging the government to reduce federal excise and sales taxes by 5 cents a litre. Federal levies and the GST total more than 17 cents a litre.
John Williamson, the Taxpayers Federation national director, slammed the decision to boost government allowances while claiming nothing could be done for consumers.
“I think there are two sets of rules in Ottawa, one for federal employees and another for taxpayers at large,” he said.
Up to 40 percent of the price of gas is government taxes. That’s another thing that sort of reminds me of the old Soviet Union.
