I liked this portion of the Fox News Channel live blog of last night’s debate:
UPDATED: Obama said McCain is “right” nine times
by Mosheh Oinounou
Obama has said “John is right” five times in the debate so far. Fodder for the next McCain political ad perhaps?
UPDATE 1: 10:29 pm ET–That was quick. The McCain campaign has put together a montage of Obama’s lines before the debate was even over!
UPDATE 2: Final count: 9 times
And here’s the sentences:
• “Well, I think Senator McCain’s absolutely right that we need more responsibility,…”
• “But John is right we have to make cuts. “
• “Well, Senator McCain is absolutely right that the earmarks process has been abused…”
• “He’s also right that oftentimes lobbyists and special interests are the ones that are introducing these kinds of requests, although that wasn’t the case with me.”
• “Now, John mentioned the fact that business taxes on paper are high in this country, and he’s absolutely right.”
• “Senator McCain is absolutely right that the violence has been reduced as a consequence of the extraordinary sacrifice of our troops and our military families.”
• “And, John, I — you’re absolutely right that presidents have to be prudent in what they say.”
• “Now, Senator McCain is also right that it’s difficult. This is not an easy situation.”
• “Senator McCain is absolutely right, we cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran.”
And here’s a poll taken at the Drudge Report:
{{{{DRUDGE POLL}}}} WHO WON THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE?…
MCCAIN
68% 210,416
OBAMA
30% 92,638
NEITHER
2% 7,403Total Votes: 310,457
However, the brilliant Charles Krauthammer opined last night that up against McCain who was in his element, Obama held his own weight (not mentioning that Obama is 97 pounds after a burger), and by that measure alone, he probably “won”.
I (the less brilliant Joel Johannesen) would just say that Obama churned out absolutely nothing “new”. There was no “change” and certainly no “hope”. No new ideas, no new philosophy, just well-rehearsed talking points dotted with a thousand “ums”. He does nothing more than talk the talk of a straight-up far-leftist who is surreptitiously embarking on a road to big government, socialism, and soft diplomacy for America, and he strikes me as a naive and dangerously ill-equipped young man to lead the most powerful nation on Earth at this time in history.
