Paul Jackson says in his column today (in our Columnist section) that Conservative Party voters should fear not. Stay positive, avoid the liberal-left media (Globe and Mail, CBC, Toronto Star, et al), and things just might work out. He talks about some recent polls but neglects, for some reason, the most recent poll showing even better news for the Conservatives. Let’s just call that an affirmation that Jackson is right as usual.
[…] They say Harper is a boring fellow without the pizzazz, say, of Brian Mulroney, who ran up the two largest majority governments in Canadian history.
Yet if Harper is boring, what’s so attractive about the flustered-faced, dithering Martin?
My guess is if the Conservatives run a positive and dynamic campaign—ignoring the CBC, Toronto (Red) Star and the Globe and Mail, and getting their message across in friendly media—they could turn the polls around quickly.
Don’t forget, in 1984, Mulroney’s Conservatives were as many as 20 points behind John Turner’s Liberals when the campaign started, then on election day whipped the Grits 211-40 seats. […]
As promised, Cinnamon Stillwell hits us with two columns this weekend, the second of which appears today. It’s about the lunacy in San Francisco where some on the left are trying to declare themselves a veritable “military-free zone”. It sounds so much like Vancouver and other liberal-leftist cities in Canada that it reminds me once again how similar Canadians and Americans are. She could easily be talking about Vancouver and its anti-American, anti-capitalist peacenicks and socialists rather than San Francisco.
[…] While it’s obvious what socialist groups would stand to gain from undermining the U.S. military and by extension the capitalist system it defends, one might wonder at the motivations of the other groups backing the measure. Could it be they have some interest in weakening the U.S. military?
[…] Not content with simply protesting the war, they’ve trained their sights on all things military. In an apparent effort to rid the city of any semblance of its military history, various leftist groups, and even some city officials, are trying to erase the military’s presence altogether. In short, San Francisco has declared itself a military-free zone.
Following on the heels of their success in sometimes violently shutting down job fairs that include military recruiters on college campuses, the counterrecruitment movement is now looking to broaden its influence. Instead of merely protesting the existence of military recruiters on campuses, the movement wants to ban them altogether. […]
