What’s this about? (Nod to Murphy who sent it to me)
According to Jim Lehrer at the introduction to the debates, “The umbrella topic is foreign policy and homeland security, but the specific subjects were chosen by me, the questions were composed by me, the candidates have not been told what they are, nor has anyone else.
And now let’s rewind the tape. Actual transcript of debate, starting at a 90-second rebuttal of Kerry to Bush:
KERRY: [edited out the first part of Kerry’s 90-second rebuttal as it is irrelevant to this point] … This president has made, I regret to say, a colossal error of judgment. And judgment is what we look for in the president of the United States of America. … [edited out the rest as irrelevant to the point]
LEHRER: New question, two minutes, Senator Kerry.
“Colossal misjudgments.” What colossal misjudgments, in your opinion, has President Bush made in these areas?
KERRY: Well, where do you want me to begin?
First of all … [edited out the rest]
If the questions were composed by Lehrer—in advance—and kept secret, doesn’t it strike you as strange that Kerry hit on the precise words—in a rebuttal—that were in Lehrer’s very next official pre-written question, that is, about “colossal misjudgments”?
(And quite apart from that, isn’t that one heck of a pre-loaded way to ask a question of Kerry?)
