Christian youth group seeks cash to aid Darfur

Saturday, September 25, 2004A Christian youth group on the North Shore [Vancouver, Canada] is raising money for Sudan’s troubled Darfur region and is calling for swift action by Canada, the U.S. and Britain to stop the violence.
The group of more than 50 teens from six high schools in West and North Vancouver will seek donations Monday at a rally at St. Francis in the Wood church in the Caulfeild area of West Vancouver.
“Our ultimate goal is to see troops deployed to Darfur. We think that’s the only thing that will help. Economic sanctions won’t help,” the group’s organizer, Nick Anastas, said this week.
Youth for Darfur is one of a growing number of voices calling for intervention in western Sudan, where more than 50,000 people have been killed and a million-plus forced from their homes.
…In late July, the group received an urgent e-mail from Isobel Perry of Christian Aid in Western Africa, imploring it to lobby the Canadian government to send troops to Darfur.
That prompted letters to Defence Minister Bill Graham, Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew and North Vancouver Liberal MP Don Bell, but no one replied, Anastas said.
Many other churches also wrote but to no avail, he added.
