Canadians behaving badly**

**according to liberal-left government bureaucrats and know-it-alls, who are no doubt busy trying to fix this abhorrent situation of Canadians doing what they want instead of what they’re told, and watching what they want instead of watching what the state broadcasts on its state-run media.  You see, THIS is exactly the calamity they were referring to when they were talking about beer and popcorn.

Memo to self:  Has the state-run state censor CRTC allowed us to get HBO in Canada yet?  Look into it!

Memo to nation: Did you know that Canadian cable and satellite companies must, by federal government law, provide (not optional) to their customers as part of their basic package:

—All local and regional CBC stations (CBC is our state-run media),
—An English CBC station and a French CBC station,
—At least one English and one French CBC radio station.

The Broadcasting Act mandates CBC to achieve universal distribution

And did you know that back in 1996, the only way CTV could win the license to have their CTV Newsworld channel was to agree not to compete with CBC’s Newsworld.  That’s why they became and still are, for the most part, a “headline news” only service—short and concise 15-minute newscasts.  According to the state-censor, the CRTC, CTV’s service would have to be “complementary to, and not competitive with, existing Canadian specialty services” (namely the state-run CBC Newsworld).  They actually got in trouble with the state-regulator/censor because of the extended Mike Duffy segment they started doing a few years ago.  The CBC complained, and the CRTC actually launched hearings.

Their license has changed only recently (CBC officially intervened in the hearings and opposed the change).  Thus Duffy’s program is legal according to the state-censors.

And did you know that during the lengthy hearings before the state censor when there was an application for Fox News to be unbanned and allowed to be broadcast in Canada, the CRTC actually took the time to officially consider whether or Fox News Channel was as potentially threatening to our nation as Al Jazeera (which, by the way, they approved before Fox News Channel, though with some restrictions)?

This was included in their November 2004 report:

16. Twenty-six individuals suggested that the Commission should approve the addition of Fox News to the digital lists, but only if the Commission applied the same terms as it applied to the carriage of the non-Canadian Arabic-language news and public affairs programming service, Al Jazeera. In support of this position, some individuals cited an instance in which Fox commentator Bill O’Reilly allegedly berated a member of the family of a 9/11 victim for signing a petition opposing the Iraq war.

17.  The Commission received 35 comments from individuals who opposed the addition of Fox News, most of whom objected to the content of the service. Several individuals referred to Fox News as a service that presents a biased, conservative viewpoint supportive of Republican interests. Others opposed to the addition of the service suggested that the Commission should not authorize its carriage because of what they alleged to be Fox’s conservative ideological slant.

38. Some interveners suggested that BDUs wishing to distribute Fox News should be subject to the same condition of licence applicable to those that wish to distribute Al Jazeera. The Commission considers that there is nothing on the record of this proceeding that would lead it to conclude that such treatment is necessary in the case of Fox News. Specifically, none of the reasons cited by interveners for such an approach give the Commission sufficient cause for concern that there would be abusive comment or abusive pictorial representation in the programming broadcast by Fox News that, when taken in context, tends to or is likely to expose an individual or group or class of individuals to hatred or contempt on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or mental or physical disability. Accordingly, the Commission will not impose any requirement on BDUs for the distribution of Fox News other than those that generally apply with respect to the carriage of non-Canadian services that are included on the digital lists.

And no, you can’t get HBO in Canada.  It’s banned. Would encroach upon “Canadian culture”, which from what I can tell is nearly exactly the same as American culture; or it would encroach upon our superior liberal-left “Canadian values”, or dare to compete against Canadians (in the same way that the government does), or something. The state is protecting me and my culture by preventing me from viewing certain US networks.  Vote liberal.
