Anti-“Christmas” school official skips out leaving $700,000 debt

Of course, as we know from my efforts in previous years, there is only a “so-called” anti-Christmas crusade going on.  It’s all in our minds!

Apparently we all simply imagine a memo a school superintendent wrote to school principles advising that:

“seasonal events [at district schools] are appropriate but they should not be labelled ‘Christmas Concert.’”

…and by the way, “progressives” will soon be on us about that whole “date” thing.  We should stop calling this year “the year 2006”, because it relates to Jesus Christ, and that ain’t liberal.  Someone’s bound to be offended by the year.  Every year.

Missing school official owes $700,000

A former school superintendent famous for advising schools against using the word “Christmas” to describe winter concerts has left Nanaimo and left behind a $700,000 debt to the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district.

Jamie Brennan, chair of the board of trustees for Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district 68, said the B.C. Schools Protection Program has not been able to contact Carola Lane, former superintendent for the district. The Schools Protection Program is the government insurance program responsible for paying the debt if Lane doesn’t, Brennan said.

Lane was dismissed by the school district on Feb. 10, 2003, three months after she circulated a notice advising schools not to use the word “Christmas” for seasonal school events. As a result, she was publicly criticized by some school trustees, and the story attracted national media attention. Lane sued four school board trustees in the Supreme Court of B.C. for $1.6 million over allegedly defamatory statements made before her dismissal, including some about the Christmas memo.

In a judgement issued Jan. 21, 2006, Justice David Tysoe ruled none of the statements were defamatory and ordered Lane to pay the school board’s legal fees.

Brennan said the bills amount to around $690,000. The Nanaimo Daily News reported June 15 that court documents show Lane left town without providing a forwarding address. The newspaper subsequently reported she did not show up for a court date on June 20. […]

Apparently, shockingly, her work in BC was preceded by work in the socialist NDP government of Bob Rea.  She worked as director of education for Peterborough County, Ontario, from 1989 to 1991.  She then worked for premier Bob Rae and his failed socialist NDP government from 1991 to 1995. She was an assistant deputy minister in the education and labour ministries.

She didn’t shed any of her big-government bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo though, as she apparently sat as a member of something that came up with report named….

“Provincial Symposium On School Planning Councils
Summary Of Group Work – Sharing Sheets”

In it, she wrote:

We would like to share:
_ “Make good schools better.” (this is a better way to say it than… )
_ “We have to improve schools.” Negative connotation
_ show me the money!

Does anyone know more about…
_ ensuring a focus on equity/fairness (good opportunities for all students regardless of socio-economic
status)
_ assessment practices/authentic data
_ need a conference on best practices and assessment
_ educating the Fraser Institute on how to interpret data
_ we want people to share their policies/guidelines

Our plan, when we return home is:
_ meet to develop interim guidelines
_ PAC needs to amend constitution (elect SPC representatives)
_ Follow timeline

“Educating the Fraser Institute” is a top priority for school superintendents in the liberals’ Canada?  That’s strange.
