Conservatives put money where mouth is

That’s in juxtaposition to Liberals putting their mouth where the money is, or where terrorist or environmentalist or socialist butt is.

Or to put it another way, unlike the “progressive” liberal-leftists, Conservatives are, despite their short months in office, already helping Canada move forward, making actual decisions, making actual progress, defending our nation, promoting freedom and democracy and being able to more effectively fight the global war on terror.

Liberals are against that, but are in favor of “supporting our troops”, the blessed libbies are.

Navy to get three new supply ships as part of multi-billion dollar defence buildup

HALIFAX (CP) – The federal government will proceed with a $2.1-billion plan to acquire three naval supply ships, Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor announced Monday.

He made the announcement on the hangar deck of one of the navy’s frigates – HMCS St. John’s.

Four consortiums are bidding on the program, which was started under the previous Liberal government.

Irving Shipbuilding, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG, BAE Systems Ltd. and SNC Lavalin ProFac Inc. all expressed interest in building the 28,000-tonne vessels, which are meant to replace the navy’s 1960s vintage support ships.

The military’s plan to replace the steam-driven HMCS Preserver and HMCS Protecteur dates back to a defence white paper the mid-1990s, but the former Liberal government did not act on its recommendation until two years ago – after both vessels had been through multimillion-dollar refits.

The joint-support ship project is the first in a series of defence spending announcements – totalling $15 billion – the Conservative government intends to make this week.

The first new vessel is expected to enter service in 2012.

Note that there was no mention of buying “liberal-style”, which is to say that all this equipment will be brand new rather than used pieces of junk like the Liberals’ submarine purchases.

Still to come:  $1.1 billion for new army trucks, $4.2 billion for 15 heavy-lift helicopters, and $7.5 billion for tactical and heavy-lift aircraft.

And of course the usual billion dollars per year to the state-run CBC to help counteract all that good news.
