Re: Conservative Harper’s government cost-control measures vis-à-vis Canada’s insane “arts” funding: This is apparently now a perfectly acceptable little bon mot inserted into sentences in “news” stories by “reporters”, in supposedly serious, objective, unbiased, “news” papers today (as long as the subject is a conservative or a Christian):
”…Mr. Harper, who many have called a Philistine…”
—Globe and Mail today (—It’s “Canada’s national newspaper”!).
Phil·is·tine
noun
1. A member of an Aegean people who settled ancient Philistia around the 12th century b.c.
2.
a. A smug, ignorant, especially middle-class person who is regarded as being indifferent or antagonistic to artistic and cultural values.
b. One who lacks knowledge in a specific area.
adj.
1. Of or relating to ancient Philistia.
2. often philistine Boorish; barbarous
I assume the Globe and Mail, who refused to actually name anybody who calls him a “Philistine”, doesn’t think Mr. Harper is is a member of an Aegean people.
Actual quote from chairman of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Florence Minz, regarding Stephen Harper and his formal music studies in piano and music theory:
“This is no Philistine.”
OINK
Then there’s this:
Liberal MP Robert Thibault, whose West Nova riding is being targeted by the Conservatives, said Nova Scotians aren’t buying Mr. Harper’s image makeover, which has him wearing sweaters and projecting a nicer image.
“What I’m getting from Nova Scotians is they still don’t trust him,” he said. “I don’t think a few sweaters are going to make a difference. I think somebody said you can put a sweater on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”
Oh THAT story wasn’t covered in the national mainstream media at all. No, not at the Globe and Mail, no, not anywhere.
Can you just IMAGINE if a Conservative MP said it about the media’s beloved left wingers Dion, Layton, Duceppe, May, or the head of the Marijuana Party?
