A Canadian Liberal Story

A story about the hilariously biased (liberal-left, duh) Canadian media?  A story of another ridiculous leftist labor union transgression?  A story questioning the professionalism of leftists reporters, this time at the state-run CBC?

It’s all these things.  It’s Canadian.  And it’s all liberal.

A reporter at the state-run CBC was covering the story of an activist group in British Columbia.  That group was vehemently opposed to the perceived cuts to services that the provincial government—a non-extreme-left-wing (a non-NDP) government—was embarking upon.  The group was going to sue the government, and the crack reporter was all over the juicy story.  But at some point the group decided not to sue.

It should be noted that the government in British Columbia, while not a “Conservative Party” government or anything near it, is what the CBC considers a right-wing government nonetheless—by virtue of the fact that it isn’t a Marxist or, you know, an NDP government.

Well the group leader’s backtracking got the reporter from the state-run CBC all abubble.  Apparently—and I’m just guessing—he thought the group should and must sue the non-extreme-left-wingers.  I’m only guessing, because his next course of action was to, instead of reporting on the situation, purchase a box of chocolates.  His intention wasn’t to eat them but rather to spit all over them and send them to the group leader.  Thankfully he thought better of it and didn’t do that.  He is, after all, an unbiased reporter, working for the state-run CBC.

Instead, he brought the chocolate delights home, opened the box up, threw them onto his presumably dirty kitchen floor (otherwise what would be the point?), then repackaged them and sent them as a lovely anonymous “gift” to the head of the group who decided against suing the non-extreme-left-wing (non-NDP) government.  He attached a note saying “Keep up the good work!”, the state-run CBC reporter did.

A couple days later, sensing a possible moral dilemma (he works for the state-run CBC, so it must be confusing), he did try to prevent the lucky recipient from consuming the chocolaty delights, and I don’t know if he was successful, but at least we know the activist leader didn’t die from the contaminated gift from the reporter at the state-run CBC.  I’m guessing the reporter didn’t “expense” the purchase or the CBC would have been implicated as well, one would think.  ‘Course this is about liberals, so who knows?

The CBC then did the incredible:  instead of rewarding his behavior by creating an hour-long special on “the abuse reporters are forced to deal with on a day-to-day basis in capitalist society”, they fired him.

Now this being Canada, the reporter’s union would naturally have absolutely none of that. The Canadian Media Guild grieved Keating’s dismissal.  Apparently they have extremely high standards.  Spendthrift Adrienne Clarkson was a member, after all, before the Liberals appointed her to be the leader of all the land.

Why do big organized labor unions in Canada defend horrible behavior among their members?  That’s a question for another day.  And assuming we aren’t poisoned in the meantime by a state-run media employee, we may get the chance to cover that angle.

Most every reporter in Canada belongs to the Guild.  Clearly we can see from this that reporters are well protected against recriminations if they ever try to send you contaminated chocolates. I can’t say the public receives the same protection from their state-run media reporters and their techniques or apparent biases.

To no one’s surprise, a labor arbitrator dismissed the firing, indicating that what the reporter did really wasn’t that bad.  It’s not as if he worked for Fox News Channel or anything.  That would have been quite different. Sure it was inappropriate, he admitted, but to fire the guy?  N’uh-uh.  It wasn’t journalistic misconduct, he said.  Once again, he was a reporter for the state-run CBC—not a Fox News Channel reporter, so it’s a whole different standard.  A three-month suspension would do in this case.

Now the BC Supreme Court, in a surprise move, overturned that stupid ruling and has allowed the firing, much to the union’s dismay.  Perhaps the judges all subscribe to the recently unbanned (by the official state-run state censor CRTC) Fox News Channel (which is now available even outside of Parliament Hill in Canada on Rogers Cable, Shaw Cable, and Star*Choice!), and have seen actual fair and balanced reporting and what that’s like, and this wasn’t it.

It should be remembered that the process leading up to this reporter being fired was only possible because the reporter confessed to the act—in some ways like the Svend Robinson case (Robinson being an elected MP and a leader within the extreme left-wing socialist NDP).  Nobody would have known anything otherwise.  Yummy chocolates laden with bodily fluids or floor scum might have been consumed all over the country.  Who knows how other reporters behave?  I imagine the vast majority are in fact fair and balanced in that liberal-left kind of way.

No telling what would have happened if the reporter worked for Fox News Channel. I imagine they receive more chocolates than they send.
