My wife and I have been away at a beachside resort for the past couple of days (which explains my lack of posting here). It’s mostly business but we were going to spend longer here than necessary just to unwind a bit.
We changed our minds however. We knew we were pretty tied to our computers and our internet connections—that’s why we brought two laptops with us, a cell phone, a cell phone card for one laptop, and each laptop decked-out with all the latest ethernet and dial-up internet-connection gizmos. We checked ahead of time to make sure they had internet connections and they did.
I’m slowly starting to figure out that hotel and resort operators don’t go online when they go away (lucky them)—if they did they’d realize that internet service away from home sucks—and for those of us who rely on it—that sucks.
I’m plugged-into a cable connection right now that goes on and off, on and off—and rather than unwinding, I’ve got tiny piles of hair that I’ve ripped from my head strewn about.
I copied lots of essential material and information over to my laptop prior to leaving home, so that I’d have everything I thought I’d need at my fingertips, but still I find I need passwords, files, and programs that live only on my desktop at home—and no, I haven’t configured things to be able to drive my desktop computer with my laptop while at the beach, yet. And if I had, it would only work intermittently anyway, apparently.
So we’ll be checking-out later this morning and coming home early. I’m thinking the next generation of kids will laugh at this period of technological history. When I was younger, the internet was REALLY bad…. and all that.
