The liberal media is dropping the ball for the Liberals

I posted yesterday asking about what I saw as interference from the Prime Minister’s Office into the RCMP investigation into the Grewal/Liberal bribery scandal. I said that the CTV, which first reported it, seemed to be giving a pass to the Liberals without asking the tough questions.

For example, in their story, they said:

On Wednesday, there was confusion over the exact nature of the RCMP probe.

“We are looking into the allegations of what happened and what everyone is talking about if, in fact, a criminal act happened,” RCMP Cpl. Nathalie Deschenes told CTV News.

Later, the Prime Minister’s Office asked CTV to call RCMP Chief Superintendent Bernie Corrigan, who contradicted Cpl. Deschenes’ statement. He said there was no criminal investigation at this point, but the Mounties are considering a formal request from the Bloc Quebecois for an inquiry.

“How did they know in the PMO, and can the prime minister tell us when his communications department became the official spokesperson for the RCMP?” MacKay asked on Thursday.

But then they handled it like this (—in that same story):

The Conservatives are saying that “it left the impression that the Prime Minister’s Office might have been meddling in this,” CTV’s Rosemary Thompson reported from Ottawa.

“Now, speaking to the official at the PMO, they are very adamant, saying they never spoke to the RCMP. This of course would be very serious for the Prime Minister’s Office to be engaging in any kind of influence of a police investigation, adamantly they are saying over and over again they never spoke to the RCMP.”

… and then seemed quite prepared to leave it at that.  It is as if to say:  “The Liberals said so, and they even said they’re adamant (ooh!), so they’re obviously OK, let’s eat donuts!”

Now the Toronto Star, ever vigilant against any hint of the Conservative Party (or anything right wing) ever doing anything remotely untoward, picks up the case:

The Liberals were also asked to explain why officials in the Prime Minister’s Office had on Wednesday been steering reporters to a senior RCMP official who said the Mounties had not decided whether to launch an investigation of the tapes affair.

This appeared to contradict a lower-level RCMP spokesperson who said an investigation was under way.

Pressed on whether the PMO was interfering with the police, Martin said, “My office has not contacted the RCMP. What my office has done is to simply reply to media inquiries.”

… and that’s it!

Can you just imagine the times the liberal media presses (to death, they hope) any conservative-minded person when they think they could make an example of them or embarrass them and their cause in any way?  Impeding an RCMP investigation or manipulating it in any way is an extremely important matter.  And they handle it by asking a simplistic question, then walking away completely satisfied with the lame answer?  How revealing of their bias.  And how dangerous for Canada.
